NSF49--National Sanitation Foundation Standard
Number 49 class II (Laminar Flow) Biohazard Cabinetry to give its full title
is the American (USA) standard for class II cabinets. NSF49 recognizes various types of class II microbiological safety cabinets (msc in Europe - BSC (biological safety cabinets) in the USA) only one of which compares to European design criteria. These being Type A1 (similar to an en12469: 2000 recirculating class II msc), Type B1 (30% recirculation and 70% exhaust together with the option of an under worksurface hepa filter), Type B2 (often referred to as total exhaust as there is no recirculating air in the cabinet) and Type A2 (similar to an en12469: 2000 class II when vented to atmosphere - normally via a thimble exhaust scheme). The above revisions were made in 2002 NSF49 differs substantially to en12469 (the European norm). Remember regardless to which standard microbiological (biohazard) safety cabinets are manufactured in accordance with, there is no substitute for good aseptic working techniques, the best cabinet in the world won't compensate for bad technique! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
